TheSoviet 91/30 PU – Sniper Rifleof the Red Star Words and pictures by MickToalFor manymilitary longarms collectors, a sniperrifle is the ultimate acquisition. However, such rarity and precisioncomes at a cost, and, should a sniperrifle ever be found on the market, theprice generally precludes any impulsebuys. But don’t despair, there arestill a few sniping weapons with verycolourful histories out there for anaccessible price, and, whatsmore, theyare also great fun and cheap to shoot– the Soviet 91/30 PU. Perhaps bestknown the world over as thenon-speaking star of thatHollywood interpretation of the Battleof Stalingrad – Enemy at the Gates– the 91/30 PU was made in greaternumbers than any other sniper rifle inhistory. But that’s not to say theyare common, or uninteresting –entering service with Russia late in1942, the 91/30 PU remained in Sovietservice until at least the early1970s, the rifles took part in all thepivotal Cold War conflicts of thelatter half of the last century -including the Middle East, Korea andVietnam – and they were manufacturedpost-war by Poland, Hungary andCzechoslovakia. Although originallydesigned to help repel the hatedGerman invader from Mother Russia’ssoil in the darkest days of World WarII, these weapons were later wieldedby enemies of the Aussie Digger and USground forces, who encountered andcaptured more than a few examples inKorea and during the Vietnam conflict. FIRST A BIT OF HISTORYThe longestcontinuously serving military rifle inhistory, the Mosin-Nagant was adoptedby Imperial Russia in 1891 as theM1891, better known in the West as theModel 91. It takes its name from thedesigners of the combined majorcomponents – Russian ArmyCaptain Sergei Ivanovich Mosin, and Belgian weapons designer LeonNagant, who developed the magazine andfeeding system.
From this original“cavalry stopper” long arm chamberedin the 7.62x54 Russian cartridge –which more resembles a pike when itscruciform bayonet is attached – grew afamily of basic but effective riflesand carbines manufactured by severalnations (including France, Finland andthe United States) which are still inlimited mainstream service throughoutthe world today. The 91/30PUsniper rifle is an adaptation of the91/30 rifle, which, as thenomenclature suggests, is a 1930upgrade of the Model 91. Although thefunctional and robust bolt andmagazine remained essentiallyunchanged, the 91/30 was fitted withan upper hand guard, reinforced slingslots replaced the original swivels, and the rear sight was re-calibratedfrom Arshins (basically aninfantryman’s pace measuring 0.71metres (0.78 yards) to metres, with amaximum range of 2000 metres.
